Compassionate Legislation for Horses

Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act

Congressman Dan Burton spoke at a campaign fundraiser focused on ending horse slaughter held in Rancho Santa Fe on June 29th. Burton is pushing in support of HR 503, the legislation that would make it illegal for Americans to sell and transport horses for slaughter in Canada and Mexico. Over 100,000 healthy horses are shipped out of the US to Canada and Mexico slaughter plants every year, destined for human consumption by wealthy foreigners. “Our goal is to make sure there is humane treatment for horses in this country,” Burton said. The roughly 150 attendees were asked to make campaign contributions to Burton, who is seeking reelection in Indiana for the 15th term.

Congressman Burton is a proponent of HR 503, which makes killer-buying an offense punishable by up to three years in prison.

The event was held by Madeleine and T. Boone Pickens of Del Mar. Madeline Pickens said she wants to protect 33,000 wild horses by building a sanctuary large enough for them to all roam free. Thousands of free roaming wild horses have been rounded up and retained in U.S. holding facilities. Under the guise of population control, the government is considering euthanizing thousand of wild horses- which in truth means shipping them off to barbaric slaughterhouses outside the U.S.
